Since its inception in 2002, the V-STROM brand has attracted massive global fan-fare by providing owners with consummate comfort, convenience, reliability and enjoyment for money.
The latest generation V-STROM model line-up; the V-STROM 1050 and flagship V-STROM 1050DE convey Suzuki’s commitment to satisfying the needs of modern adventure riders, who want motorcycles built to take them wherever they wish to go.
The V-STROM 1050 is designed for maximising comfort and performance for long-distance adventure touring, primarily on paved surfaces. Featuring 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cast aluminium wheels and a large touring windscreen with tool-less height adjustment.
In contrast, the V-STROM 1050DE introduces several new features aimed at optimising performance on unpaved surfaces. These include the adoption of a 21-inch wire-spoked wheel, longer rake and wheelbase enhancing controllability on gravel and flat dirt, increased suspension travel for better bump absorption, wider handlebars, wider steel footpegs, aluminium engine protection and an accessory bar as standard equipment. Also newly introduced Gravel [G] mode to the Suzuki Traction Control System and the ability to switch OFF rear ABS.
Suzuki’s highly acclaimed 1,037cc, 90° V-twin, DOHC engine features strong linear torque in the mid RPM range, and free-revving nature that maximises power output in the high RPM range.
The outstanding characteristics of a 90° V-twin engine make it the perfect fit for the V-STROM 1050. Its design provides perfect primary balance, with each of the two cylinders cancelling each out the vibration of the other. This eliminates the need for any balancer shafts, preventing the mechanical losses associated with them, and this connects to improving thermal efficiency for higher power output.
The layout of the V-twin engine allows for a slimmer chassis design with a lower centre of gravity, contributing to nimbler handling and greater manoeuvrability.
The six-speed transmission features updated gear ratios. The revised ratio for first gear makes shifting from first through to fifth smoother and improves acceleration. Sixth gear was also optimised for greater comfort at highway speeds.
The advanced slipper clutch delivers a light clutch lever pull, reducing rider fatigue. It also ensures positive power transfer when accelerating and smoother deceleration when downshifting, preventing rear-wheel hopping.
The V-twin engines employs highly-rigid, lightweight forged pistons. The heads are anodized and conical machining inside the wrist pin holes transfer load and mitigate stress transferred to the crowns for enhanced durability.
Each of the two cylinders is fed by independent 49mm large-bore electronically-controlled throttle bodies. The butterfly valve of each throttle body is open and closed independently to achieve precise throttle control.
Hollow sodium-filled exhuast valves help reduce the temperature in the combustion chamber. This not only results in better loading efficiency and improved feeling, it also contributes to improving the durability of the valves themselves.
Each cylinder utilises two iridium spark plugs. The primary plug fires throughout the engine's rpm range, while the secondary plug helps improve combustion efficiency and power delivery at low rpm.
The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S) features a collection of advanced electronic rider assist systems. The rider can freely choose the settings of each system to best suit their level of skill and experience, and to optimise performance characteristics for the riding conditions and road surface at any given moment.
These systems help make the V-STROM 1050 more controllable, predicable, and less tiring to operate. Each system has been designed and thoroughly tested to operate the way a rider expects, providing an exciting riding experience that inspires confidence.
Designed to prevent the rear wheel from slipping, this sytem reduces stress and fatigue whilst instilling greater confidence. The rider can select from 3 modes of control or can opt to turn the system off altogether.
This system maintains a set speed without operating the throttle. Available in 2nd gear and above at engine speeds between 2,000rpm and 7,000rpm, which roughly translates to vehicle speeds of 25km/h to 160km/h.
Automatically applies the rear brake for 30 seconds after coming to a stop while facing uphill on an incline, even when the brake lever or pedal is released. This helps to prevent rollback.
Constantly monitors posture and angle, and if required controls brake pressure to prevent rear wheel lift and help achieve confident braking, even when riding downhill.
SDMS is designed to offer the rider a choice between three different modes that change output characteristics to match riding conditions or preferences.
Mode A (Active) provides the sharpest response at low to mid-range speeds and reaches the top of its power curve at lower rpm. Settings for torque characteristics are finely tuned to deliver the exciting acceleration and fully leverage the V-twin engine’s power. It is well suited for enjoying spirited runs on winding roads in good weather.
Mode B (Basic) reaches the same level of maximum output, but features a more linear curve with slightly softer throttle response at low to mid-range speeds. Labelled as the perfect setting for touring, this mode aims to make the motorcycle more controllable and instil confidence when accelerating, and to make it a good fit for a wide range of rider styles and road conditions in everyday riding.
Mode C (Comfort) provides the softest throttle response and more gentle torque characteristics, delivering power in smoother linear fashion while still reaching the same level of maximum power output. The gentler throttle response and limited torque production as the throttle is opened makes more obedient and controllable when riding on wet or otherwise slippery surfaces, when road conditions are bad, or even when the rider wants to relax and enjoy a ride home after a long outing.
Integrating accelerometers and gyroscopes into a single compact package, the 6-axis Bosch IMU measures angular rate and acceleration to constantly monitor pitch, roll, and yaw.
Allows the rider to shift up or down without needing to operate the clutch or throttle. The system delivers clean, silky-smooth upshifts with uninterrupted acceleration. Downshifts are also quick and smooth, thanks to the automatic hands-free blipping function.
The V-STROM 1050DE features an additional G (Gravel) traction control mode that allows a certain amount of rear-wheel slip when riding on unpaved surfaces. Not recommended for use on paved surfaces.
For improved controllability on gravel and other unpaved surfaces, the rear ABS can be turned off on the V-STROM 1050DE. The system is also optimised to work in conjunction with the new 21-inch front wheel.
Tokico radial mount monobloc four-piston front brake calipers are mated with 310mm floating dual discs to provide sure stopping power and controllable braking performance. The rear brake sports a 260mm disc and matched with a single-piston pin-slide caliper.
This system enhances control by allowing ABS activation not only when travelling in a straight line, but also when the bike is leaning whilst cornering. Intervention is determined by monitoring input from the front and rear wheel speed sensors along with vehicle posture data from the IMU. The compact hydraulic ABS unit controls brake pressure in response to the data received. The bike is therefore less likely to try to push itself upright or lose traction, instead maintaining its radius and lean angle to better trace the rider’s intended line through the corner. Even if the rider panics and brakes heavily in a corner, the system assists in maintaining stability while slowing or stopping the motorcycle.
Braking confidence is further enhanced via the Combined Braking System which provides braking power to the both front and rear brakes when operating the front brake lever.
This system allows the rider to select between two levels of ABS intervention. Mode 1 provides minimal intervention, while Mode 2 intervenes more proactively.
